Obituary for Rev. E. Crowell "Midge" Cooley

The Rev. E. Crowell “Midge” Cooley passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 31st, 2018. Rev. Cooley is survived by his wife of 66 years, Grace Pomraning Cooley; by their children David, Christina, Faith Anne, Timothy, and Joshua, and their spouses; by 9 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Midge is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Crowell and his twin Charles were born on August 29, 1929, in Havre de Grace, Harford County, Maryland. He attended the University of Maryland for three years. Becoming convinced he was being called into the ministry, he attended and in 1952 earned a BD from Reformed Episcopal Seminary in Philadelphia. He married Grace Pomraning in June 1952, and then completed his undergraduate work at Franklin and Marshall. He was ordained in 1955, while serving as a minister in West Virginia.

Called to Calvary Presbyterian, Norfolk VA in 1957, Crowell was instrumental in the nation-wide formation of the Presbyterian Church in America. Remaining at Calvary until 1974, he moved to a Presbyterian congregation in Pensacola, FL. He served in the PCA, aiding new and developing congregations. He further led churches in South Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. In retirement, he aided numerous congregations, while making strangers feel welcome in Greenville’s Second Presbyterian Church. Midge and Grace are currently members of Good Hope Presbyterian Church in Silver Spring, MD.

A man of intense conviction, Midge extolled the Scriptural teachings of the Presbyterian Church in America, and leaves the world with many friends and believers, drawn to his example.
