Obituary for Michael J. Volz

Michael J. Volz

Michael J. Volz of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2008 at the Gilchrist Center in Towson, MD. He was 76.

Mr. Volz was born in Philadelphia, PA to the Late Theodore W.C. Volz, veteran, U.S. Army, and Anna (McFadden) Volz. He was the loving husband of 21 years to Jane F. (England) Volz.

Mr. Volz was a devoted father to Stephen M. Volz, Theodore “Ted” Volz, Michelle Blevins and step-father to Daniel Craig, John Hostetter, Jr., Veteran, U.S. Air Force, Jane Gilman and Joseph Hostetter, Veteran, U.S. Air Force. He adored his grandchildren, T. J. Koicuba, who is currently serving active duty, U.S. Marine Corps., and has honorably served 1 Tour in Iraq, Leigh Ann Harkins, Erin Volz, Stephen Volz, II, and a step-grandfather to John Hostetter, III, Rhonda Smith, Leslie Fossett-Fox, Brandon Craig and Kenneth Craig. He is survived by his Step-Great Grandchildren: Kenneth Hostetter, Jennifer Hostetter and Billy Smith. Mr. Volz also a brother to U. S. Navy, Veteran of the Korean War, Francis “Reds” Volz and the Late Theodore Volz, Jr.

The Volz family has Honorably and Faithfully served their country in the military dating back to Mr. Volz’s great-great-great grandfather, Jacob Volz, and great-great-grandfather, Jacob Volz, II, both serving during the Civil War, in the Pennsylvania 98th Reg., Co. G, Infantry Volunteers.


Mr. Volz was an avid collector of coins and considered himself to be a numismatist. He had retired from the Philadelphia Electric Company, at Conowingo Hydroelectric Plant, now known as Exelon, Corp., as a Shift Supervisor and Electrician. Michael was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War, following his brother “Reds”.

A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008 from 11 AM to 12 PM at the Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington St., Havre de Grace, MD 21078.

A Memorial Service will be held at 12 PM also at the Funeral Home.

Officiating will be Rev. Edward Heydt.
